This page is for authors of European Respiratory Journal or ERJ Open Research articles who wish to take up the option of depositing the data underlying their accepted article in the Dryad repository. More information about Dryad can be found at https://datadryad.org/stash/about
ERS recommends that authors read the information on the Dryad website before submitting data.
Before depositing any data in Dryad, please ensure that all of your co-authors are happy for you to do so.
What is Dryad?
Dryad (datadryad.org) is a non-profit organisation that hosts and provides access to research datasets online.
Why is ERS working with Dryad? Can I use a different repository?
ERS has chosen to work with Dryad in order to assist authors who wish to share their underlying data. Dryad accepts a wide range of data types and formats.
Authors who wish to use another repository that is more suited to their particular data, or that has a different licensing arrangement, are free to do so.
What sort of data should I deposit?
ERS recommends that authors deposit the raw data underlying their manuscript, e.g. large data tables, raw output from measuring equipment, original images and videos, in a repository. Supplementary files such as extended methods or extra figures should still be submitted as supplementary material to be published alongside the article.
Please note that Dryad accepts human subject data only when it is properly anonymised and prepared under applicable legal and ethical guidelines. If you are depositing such data, please read Dryad's guidelines for preparing human subject data.
Dryad's general "best practices" for data preparation are at https://datadryad.org/stash/best_practice
How and when do I deposit my data?
Please see Dryad’s instructions at https://datadryad.org/stash/submission_process
You should submit your data before you submit your manuscript, so that you can provide manuscript peer reviewers with a “private for peer review” link to the data. Then when the manuscript is accepted, you can update the status of the dataset in Dryad, activating Dryad’s curation process.
Will I have to pay a fee for depositing my data in Dryad?
ERS sponsors deposits for authors, of up to 300GB each (individual files should be limited to 10GB if possible).
Who can look at or use my data once it is published in Dryad?
Anyone. Data in the Dryad repository is published under the Creative Commons “CC0” Public Domain Dedication. This means that it can be copied, used, modified and distributed without restriction. Details of the CC0 dedication can be found at creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/
How do I reference my data in my article?
If you have deposited (or will deposit) your raw data with Dryad (or another repository of your choice), please mention this in the relevant field in the submission form and in the text of your manuscript. Don’t worry at that point if you have not yet received a unique DOI for your dataset; you’ll be able to add it to the proofs of your article you will receive before it is published online, if the editorial office has not already added this information on your behalf.
What if I have already published my data in Dryad or elsewhere?
If you have deposited your data prior to acceptance, or your study is based on analysis of a previously published dataset, simply reference the data as above. ERS will not be able to refund any fees you have paid to a data repository in such cases.
