All ERS journals are experiencing unprecedented levels of manuscript submissions, primarily of manuscripts related to COVID-19. At the same time, many editors and reviewers are engaged in treating patients, conducting COVID-19-related research and dealing with the wider effects of the pandemic. If you are submitting a COVID-19 manuscript, please bear in mind the following.
- The Chief Editors cannot guarantee to “fast track” your submission, although you may request it. The journals will prioritize submissions based on the impression the editors get after an initial screen. This process is not guaranteed and authors are reminded that the “fast track” may take longer than usual due to the stress of the current health care situation on the peer review process. The Chief Editors emphasize that the journals will not trade speed for thoroughness of the reviewing process to maintain high quality. Thorough peer review can be a time-consuming process, and it is reliant on the volunteer labour of a large number of editors and reviewers. We understand that this can be frustrating for authors, but please understand that your article has not been forgotten or ignored.
- You may wish to upload your article to a preprint server such as medRxiv (https://www.medrxiv.org/) or bioRxiv (https://www.biorxiv.org/) before submitting it to a journal. Most medical journals, including those published by ERS, do not regard a preprint as a duplicate or prior submission.
