Register for an ORCID
1. Go to https://orcid.org/register and follow the on-screen instructions
Maintaining your ORCID
1. When submitting a paper, make sure your ORCID is verified within the journal submission system. This means logging in to the journal submission system and adding an ORCID to your account. To do this properly, you will need to add it yourself as it may require you to use your ORCID login details.
2. In your ORCID account settings (https://orcid.org/account) make sure notifications are active. (You can choose whether to have these forwarded to your email account or to read them in your ORCID account only.) When you next publish a paper, provided everything has worked properly, you should receive a notification from CrossRef asking to auto-update your ORCID account with your new paper. If you authorise this, it should happen automatically from now on.
3. You may be able to populate much of your back-catalogue using SCOPUS. Simply go to http://orcid.scopusfeedback.com/#/ and follow the step-by-step procedure.
4. A number of institutional research management systems (e.g. Symplectic and Converis) also link to ORCID, and Europe PubMed Central allows bulk updating of ORCID in a similar way to SCOPUS (http://europepmc.org/orcid/import).
5. A full list of systems that link to ORCID is at https://orcid.org/organizations/integrators/current
6. The ORCID system is good at resolving duplicates, so it doesn’t matter if you add the same paper by more than one route.
