We just received a major/minor revision decision letter. What now?
You will have been told the time limit for your revision in the decision letter. This ranges from as little as 2 weeks for book chapters, to 3 months for original research in journals. If you are not sure of your deadline, or you think you will need more time to complete the revision, please contact the Publications office.
Please prepare your revision to include a tracked changes version of the manuscript. This can be done using a tracked changes feature, or through highlighting or changing text colour. Please also prepare a point-by-point response to reviewers and upload this alongside your manuscript. Any files that are being overwritten in the revision can be deleted from the submission platform, but please keep any files that are not changing. This is also the perfect opportunity to check that all authors' Conflicts of Interest forms are up to date and accurate, and replace these if necessary.
On the ScholarOne platform, click 'create a revision' on the listing for the manuscript. Then follow the instructions in your decision letter and on the platform.
If your revision option has expired, and the system does not let you submit a revision, please get in touch with the Publications office.
Once submitted, your manuscript will be handled by the same Editor, and likely sent back to the same reviewers.
We just received a Reject & Resubmit decision letter. What now?
Creating a resubmission is very similar to creating a revision, as described above. However, your article may not be handled by the same Editor or reviewed by the same people in all cases.
Any files that are being overwritten in the resubmission can be deleted from the submission platform, but please keep any files that are not changing. This is also the perfect opportunity to check that all authors' Conflicts of Interest are up to date and accurate, and replace these if necessary.
On the ScholarOne platform, click 'create a resubmission' on the listing for the manuscript. Then follow the instructions in your decision letter and on the platform.
We just received a transfer decision letter. What now?
You may have received a decision to transfer your manuscript to one of our journals (ERJ, ERJ Open Research, European Respiratory Review, or Breathe). This is an optional opportunity to have your manuscript evaluated by the editorial board of one of the other journals in the ERS family. There is no guarantee of acceptance at the receiving journal, and as the editorial boards of each journal are different, the manuscript will be evaluated independently, with a different handling Editor and different reviewers.
You will be given 3 months to decide whether to agree to the transfer. The links are in your decision letter and on your author dashboard, but once you have clicked the 'decline' link, this cannot be undone.
If you have received reviewer or editor comments from the journal you initially submitted your manuscript to, you MUST revise your manuscript accordingly and provide a point-by-point response to reviewers before submitting to the new journal, and upload this alongside your manuscript. Manuscripts which have received reviewer comments but have not been revised will be sent back and not considered until this has been completed.
