Next page: after decision
Previous page: submitting your manuscript
We have submitted our manuscript. What happens next?
You will receive a notification by email to confirm your submission was successful and to provide you with a reference number for your manuscript.
The editorial office will check over your manuscript to ensure all required files and information are provided. If anything is missing, a member of staff will contact you and the manuscript may be returned to your ScholarOne author centre to allow you to make the required additions.
Provided your manuscript fits the scope of the journal, it will then proceed to peer review.
Which peer review model is used by ERS journals?
ERS journals use the single blind model of peer review, whereby reviewers are aware of the identities of the authors, but authors are blinded to the identity of the reviewers.
We think we may have submitted an incorrect file, what should we do?
Please contact the editorial office as soon as possible, ensuring you include your manuscript number in your email. In many cases, we will be able to replace files before they have been sent to peer reviewers.
When will we receive a decision on our manuscript?
Our editors will usually invite two peer reviewers and ask that their reports are completed within two weeks. Wherever possible these deadlines are adhered to, but high-quality peer review can sometimes take longer.
We will notify you by email as soon as a decision is made. You can also view the status of your manuscript by logging into the ‘Author centre’ on the ScholarOne manuscripts site. This will advise you on the progress of your manuscript through the peer review process. You are welcome to contact the editorial office if you have any questions – please see the contact points below. Please include your manuscript number when contacting the editorial office, as this will help us respond to your query as quickly as possible.
What possible outcomes can we expect?
The reviewer reports may suggest that revisions are necessary before the manuscript can be accepted, in which instance you will be sent a full and comprehensive list of any changes required. You will be given a reasonable deadline in which to complete the revisions. If you are due to submit a revised manuscript and believe you may miss the deadline, please contact the editorial office as soon as possible to arrange an extension.
If your manuscript is not accepted for publication, please don’t be disheartened – the editor may suggest a transfer to one of ERS’s other publications. In this instance, you will be able to accept or decline the invitation to transfer your manuscript.
If your manuscript is accepted: congratulations! We have more information on what to expect post-acceptance at https://www.ersjournals.com/authors/after-acceptance
Is there anything else we should be aware of?
Most manuscripts submitted to ERS journals are checked for similarities to material previously published, using CrossCheck’s iThenticate service. We recognise that there are many reasons similarities can appear, and in the event that a manuscript displays a high incidence of similarity, we will always discuss this first with the authors.
