Next page: Submitting your manuscript
Previous page: Choosing a journal
We have decided where to submit our manuscript. What should we do now?
General ERS policies
There are certain requirements that are unanimous across ERS publications, so it is always useful to check the following first:
- Check you are not in contravention of the ERS policy on tobacco
- Check your funding body’s policy on open access and copyright transfer
- Check all authors have completed an ICMJE conflict of interest disclosure, as we require these to be included at submission
- Check all co-authors have consented to submission and you have their email addresses – email addresses are required to ensure we can contact authors for any required publication materials
Do you have instructions for authors for us to follow?
European Respiratory Society research journals manuscript submission guidelines can be found here https://www.ersjournals.com/authors/research-ms-preparation
Each of our publications also has ‘Instructions for Authors’ guidelines on its respective website:
European Respiratory Journal: http://erj.ersjournals.com/authors/instructions
ERJ Open Research: http://openres.ersjournals.com/authors/instructions
European Respiratory Review: http://err.ersjournals.com/authors/instructions
Breathe: http://breathe.ersjournals.com/authors/instructions
It is best to prepare your manuscript according to each publication’s instructions, as there may be specific instructions relating to manuscript length, format and article types.
What if my written English isn't perfect?
All manuscripts are copyedited by ERS after they are accepted, but if you are unsure of your fluency in English you may wish to consider seeking expert writing assistance prior to submission. Manuscripts are reviewed on their scientific content, not on the quality of the writing; however, if your manuscript is written clearly, editors and peer reviewers will be better able to understand it and to provide you with valuable feedback.
There are many individuals and companies that provide English-language and writing assistance. ERS does not endorse any specific provider, but advises authors who plan to use such services to check the provider’s credentials and references carefully before entering into any agreement.
Our manuscript uses a large dataset. Do you have a data repository?
ERS research journals encourage data sharing through the Dryad data repository (http://datadryad.org/). Although an author fee is payable when depositing data with Dryad, the ERS has allocated funds to cover deposit fees for an introductory period. For a more detailed overview of depositing your data with Dryad, go to: http://www.ersjournals.com/authors/data-sharing
