Next page: after submission
Previous page: preparing your manuscript
We have everything we need to submit our manuscript. What now?
You have finished writing your manuscript and you have prepared all the files and information detailed in the journal’s Instructions for Authors page. Ensure that you have the following:
- Cover letter
- All the documents relating to the article itself
- the text, and any figures/images and tables that are separate from the main body text file
- if your manuscript is a revision of a previous submission, a clean version of the revised manuscript and a copy with changes tracked
- The contact details (e-mail addresses) for all the listed authors
- A completed ICMJE conflict of interest form for each listed author
- Any required supporting documents (permission agreements for figures, etc.)
Once you have checked these requirements, it is time to submit your manuscript for peer review.
ScholarOne Manuscripts
All ERS publications use the ScholarOne Manuscripts platform to handle manuscripts from submission to acceptance. ScholarOne is a user-friendly system used by authors, editors and editorial staff, with over 13 million users across 5,000 different publications.
The submission websites for each publication are:
ERJ: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/erj
ERJ Open Research: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/erjor
ERR: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/err
Breathe: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/edu
During submission we will ask for some additional information about your manuscript. While much of this is not mandatory, it can help to make your work more discoverable and potentially increase readership and impact. For more information please see https://www.ersjournals.com/authors/after-publication
Can we submit our manuscript by email?
Unfortunately we cannot process manuscripts sent by email. Please submit using the ScholarOne Manuscripts platform. If you have any difficulties using the site, our editorial office will be happy to help – please see the contacts list at the bottom of this page.
May we suggest reviewers?
Yes, there is a space during submission to allow you to suggest potential reviewers for the manuscript. You may also indicate opposed reviewers, if you would like request that specific reviewers are not assigned to review your paper. Please note, these are considered as suggestions only, and it is at the editor's discretion whether to take them into account.
Where do we indicate potential conflicts of interest?
All authors must include a complete ICMJE conflict of interest form at submission. There will be a space to upload these forms during submission. The form can be downloaded from: http://www.icmje.org/conflicts-of-interest/
Our figures are too large to upload in the ‘File Upload’ section – what should we do?
The total size of a submission, including all files submitted, should not exceed 100 mb. You can upload lower-resolution files for your figures, as these will be sufficient for review purposes. If the manuscript is accepted, our production team will contact you to request the original, higher-resolution figure files. If you have any other problems with uploading files as part of your submissionm - please see the contacts list at the bottom of this page.
We think we may have submitted an incorrect file, what should we do?
Please contact the editorial office as soon as possible, ensuring you include your manuscript number in your email. In many cases, we will be able to replace files before they have been sent to peer reviewers.
