ERS is committed to working with institutions to facilitate open access publishing. We launched our first “read-and-publish” deals with several UK institutions in 2020 and launched institutional open access agreements for two more of our journals in 2022. To find out more, see the explanations below. For a quote, please email subscriptions@ersnet.org with details about your institution or consortium: size, current open access policies, affiliation with other institutions (e.g. a hospital or university), membership of a university system or library consortia.

European Respiratory Journal read-and-publish agreements
What does ERS mean by “read and publish”?
The basic ERS read-and-publish deal provides full “read” access to all European Respiratory Journal content for your staff, faculty and students, along with unlimited “CC-BY” open access publishing in the European Respiratory Journal for most articles whose corresponding author is employed by your institution.
What articles are covered?
Original research articles, research letters, correspondence articles, ERJ Methods articles and review articles (and corrections to any of these articles) are covered under the agreement. The only exempted article types are editorials, official European Respiratory Society documents and articles that we cannot publish open access (for instance when a third party holds copyright).
Is it suitable for my institution?
Read-and-publish deals are available to academic institutions and healthcare providers only. Whether a read-and-publish deal is appropriate for your institution depends on your current subscription spend and research output. It may be that a conventional subscription is more appropriate, or that you would benefit more from a consortial or university system deal.
Can you work with library consortia or university systems?
If your institution doesn’t have the right profile to benefit from an individual read-and-publish deal, it is possible that your national or regional library consortium (or state university system) would be able to do so. If you are a consortial or system subscriptions manager and would like to discuss this, please contact subscriptions@ersnet.org. If you are a librarian and would like us to contact your consortium, please let us know.
Are other models available?
We are aware that organisations such as California Digital Library have been trialling other types of mixed subscription/publishing arrangements. If your organisation has a high publishing output in the European Respiratory Journal, and you would like to discuss an alternative model, please contact us at subscriptions@ersnet.org
Why is ERS doing this?
ERS is committed to open access. Three of our four journals are fully open access, and over the next few years we aim to support authors as demand for open access research in the European Respiratory Journal increases, in a way that enables us to secure the journal’s long-term future and to contribute to the ERS mission “to promote lung health in order to alleviate suffering from disease and drive standards for respiratory medicine globally”.
What if I have further questions?
